Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > The mighty Drum Tower in Xi'an is a marvellous example of imperial Chinese architecture. Like most other places of historical significance I saw in this country, it is surrounded by brand new and futuristic architecture and technology. I still got the sense that this structure is a focal point for the whole city and will still be significant regardless of other developments in the area. All images creative commons non commercial,
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > Just outside Guilin there is a hidden gem called the Reed Flute caves. It's just beautiful in there. I had to go through as part of a tour party as there was no other option so I spent all my time racing ahead with my tripod. This shot is of a pool, that when undisturbed becomes a natural mirror. Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > Guilin is a city that is built around and relies heavily on the Li river. The central lake in the city is home to 2 floating pagoda's, which like most architecture in China, are lit beautifully at night. All images creative commons non commercial
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > As I travelled down the Li River I stopped over in an amazing village called Xingping. It's a sleepy fishing village which is a picturesque as they come. The view from my hostel was akin to this however I was higher up the hill. I planned on staying one night but stayed for five! By far my favourite place I visited in China. Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > A taxi rank, Li River style. Not a bad backdrop for a boat ride. All images creative commons non commercial
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > The area surrounding the Li River in China is magical. Karst limestone mountains go on for as far as the eye can see. Yangshuo is a small town formed on the river and for the 10 days i was here, this was the view every evening at sunset. All images creative commons non commercial
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > Yangshuo is a town which sits on the Li River. It's where the majority of tourist activity in the area happens so obviously it has a night market. Like anywhere in China, it's really pretty by night. All images creative commons non commercial.
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > The Wuhua building in Dali's old town is another perfect example of the amazing Imperial Chinese architecture found there. All images creative commons non commercial
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > The top of one of Dalis' many temples a on a beautiful day. All images creative commons non commercial
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > The Drum Tower sits on the eastern wall of Dali old town. It's beautiful inside but this is a shot I grabbed on approach. All images creative commons non commercial
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > I was actually running for cover just before I took this photo. As I ran to escape the impending downpour, I glanced over my shoulder to see a break in the cloud and some awesome light occur. Like a photo ninja, I quickly set my tripod and fired off some frames. Seconds after I did, the light was gone. All images creative commons non commercial
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > Dali in China is a beautiful place to be at night. This is a shot I took of the north gate to the city one night when I was out for an explore. All images creative commons non commercial
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > The only way to get through the walls and in to the ancient city of Dali is through one of four tunnels at either gate. I expect this made it difficult to conquer. This shot is of the south gate tunnel. The tunnel almost points you towards the temple pagoda that sits in the centre of old town. All images creative commons non commercial
Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > While exploring Dali, I was drawn back to this watch tower over and over again. The town is full of ancient architecture and buildings but I always found myself wanting to shoot this one. This watch tower was immediately outside my hotel and guards the south gate. Ben Ashmole (ashmolephotography) > I have no Idea why there was a golden pheonix statue sat outside of the old town of Dali. With the backdrop of the Cangshan mountains it stood out nicely. All images creative commons non commercial
